How Our Products Work

Our phantoms and related accessories provide medical imaging professionals with the ability to test imaging equipment. Our products may be used in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), and in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They are designed primarily for acceptance testing, quality control, and research purposes.

An imaging phantom or “phantom” is a scientific device that is often used in the biomedical research community. A phantom is a specially designed object that is utilized as a “stand-in” for human tissue and can be scanned or imaged to evaluate, analyze, and fine-tune the performance of an imaging device. Phantoms provide consistent results, ensure that the systems and methods for imaging the human body are operating correctly, and provide reliable and quantitative/measurable information.

Each of our phantoms are designed with a particular imaging type in mind and measure relevant values for that system. The phantom, created primarily out of Acrylic PMMA and filled with water, mimics the photon properties of human tissue, which means the material will respond in a similar manner to how human tissues and organs would act under the specific imaging modality. The corresponding image of the phantom demonstrates that the evaluating system is working as intended, and the imaging system’s functionality is at optimal performance.

While Data Spectrum is known as the home of the Jaszczak Phantom and Hoffman Brain phantom, we also want to be recognized as a company that provides high quality phantoms that exceed expectations. At Data Spectrum, we specialize in PET and SPECT, but also create phantoms for combined cameras like PET/CT and SPECT/CT. We pride ourselves on providing quantitative imaging that can numerically measure medically significant attributes rather than simply producing images to look at and interpret. At Data Spectrum, we set the bar high and are a ACR Phantom partner for SPECT (“NM” often) and PET accreditation programs and work closely with professional organizations to update our phantoms to meet NEMA standards. We are also able to create custom phantoms to meet the needs of our clients.
